This is my third year in a row of declaring I'm not writing any more books that I've started writing another book. It doesn't mean that I'll publish it, but I'm writing it. I have a few written that I haven't published. Yet.
That's how it is being a writer. You write even if no one else ever sees or even knows you're writing. And no matter how many times you confess to the world you're finished writing and are going to focus on other things, you continue to write because you can't stop.
Writing matters to the world, therefore, writers matter. The profession and opportunities for writing have changed over the years, of course, but the written word continues to endure. I'm an example. I speak to groups and record teaching videos, but before those things happen I'm writing out my topics in at least an outline, and often more than that (ie. ebooks). Though people enjoy me as a speaker, I'm much more coherent a sharer in writing.
Being a writer is encoded in my DNA; it's a part of who I am. It's not all I am, but it's a core part of my identity and I'll write the rest of my life with or without readers because I'm a writer.
What about you? Do you write because you're compelled to? Do you know how to allow your writing to help mold your life, even if not a professional writer? I'm here to help.
Building a writing portfolio is a smart way to present your skills and passion for words to others. Thanks to technology, internet access and free website hosting you can start a blog in an hour and begin sharing with the world.
In addition to authoring books and ebooks, I contribute written articles to various blogs. While some are paid gigs in which I provide content as a ghost writer, I have several of my own that I use for teaching and marketing my products and services.
My most-popular blog is Z Writes Words. Even when I don't update it regularly, it gets at least 5,000 views each week. That usually doubles when I'm posting. It's actually my second blog. The first platform I used was a Tumblr blog.
If you enjoy writing - even just as a hobby - starting a blog can help you showcase what you write. You never know ... if you become an international bestselling author in the future, you'll have perfect documentation of where it all began.
